FUNDING OUR TEACHERS - Bridging the gap for critical funding for Carteret County Public Schools
Why is There a Need to Fund Teachers?

The $1.3 million budget shortfall facing Carteret County schools threatens the quality of education our students receive. Addressing this funding gap is crucial to maintaining the excellence our school system is known for. A fully-funded budget ensures smaller classroom sizes, crucial support, individualized instruction, inspiring electives, and a diverse curriculum for every student.

Communities are often measured by the quality of their schools, and effective instruction is key to student achievement. Attracting and retaining top educators is essential, as they inspire our students and help them reach their full potential. Unfortunately, state funding falls short for positions and programs not deemed "essential," and local funds falling short of $1.3 million dollars, on the heels of the loss of ESSER (post COVID, temporary funding) is exacerbating the issue. Add increased costs with no increased funding, and the recent budget shortfall put crucial roles at risk.

Understanding School Funding
CCPS Funding Sources

  • Federal, State, and Local Funds: The school system's budget is a combination of these three sources.

  • Federal and State Funds: These funds cover minimum staffing requirements and basic materials for schools.

  • Local Funding: Provided by the County, local funding ensures additional essential positions, maintaining excellence.

Local money is relied on to fund these crucial yet underfunded positions:

  • Additional teaching positions and support staff

  • The majority of Assistant Principals

  • Custodians

  • Staff development

  • Health insurance for locally-paid employees

  • Building maintenance and contracted services such as lawn and septic services

Impact of the Funding Gap

The funding gap has severe implications. We face cuts to vital programs and positions,These roles are essential for maintaining a supportive and effective learning environment in class sizes well below state average. Without sufficient funding, our ability to provide quality education and support is at risk.

Foundation’s Resolution: A Call to Action

In response to the CCPS Administration’s urgent request following the 2024-25 budget shortfall, the Carteret County Public School Foundation has committed to a short-term campaign:

These funds will cover the salary and benefits of our first Big Rock Teaching Fellow entering the workforce for the 2024-2025 school year.
